The red squirrel is a small, tree dwelling mammal native to Europe and parts of Asia. Known for its reddish brown fur, tufted ears, and bushy tail, it thrives in coniferous and mixed forests where it feeds on seeds, nuts, berries, and fungi. Agile and solitary, red squirrels build nests high in trees and are most active during the early morning and late afternoon.

In the UK and Ireland, red squirrels have declined due to habitat loss and competition from the non-native grey squirrel, which also spreads a deadly disease to them. Conservation efforts are underway to protect red squirrel populations and their woodland homes. Despite these challenges, the red squirrel remains a cherished symbol of native wildlife.
