Puffins: The Clowns of the Sea
Puffins are charming seabirds known for their colorful beaks and quirky personalities. Often nicknamed “clowns of the sea,” these small birds are instantly recognizable by their bright orange beaks, especially vivid during the breeding season. Found along the rocky cliffs of the North Atlantic, puffins are excellent swimmers, using their wings like flippers to dive and catch fish.
Despite their comical appearance on land, puffins are skilled hunters at sea, capable of carrying multiple fish in their beaks at once sometimes over a dozen! Each summer, they return to the same nesting spots, often digging burrows to raise their chicks, called pufflings.
Sadly, puffins face threats from climate change and overfishing, which impact their food supply. Conservation efforts are helping protect these beloved birds, ensuring they continue to brighten coastal skies for generations to come.
